Christmas Light Installation Costs in Barrie (2026)
Planning ranges for Christmas light installation and permanent lighting in Barrie for 2026, and why a steep brick house near the bay costs more to light than a bigger subdivision two-storey in Holly.
These are planning ranges, not prices. They describe what holiday lighting commonly costs on Barrie houses so that you can judge a quote. The number for your house is written after a look at it, or at clear photos of each side, because the linear metres of roofline, the number of peaks, the height and the outlets are what decide it.
Planning ranges
- Seasonal roofline install, bungalow or simple two-storey front: typically $400–$900 including lights supplied for the season, install, January takedown and storage.
- Seasonal install, larger two-storey with peaks, several sides or a steep older house: typically $900–$2,000. Steep Allandale and East End gables and long Midhurst rooflines sit toward the top.
- Install only, using your own certified lights: typically $250–$700, depending on height and length.
- Tree and landscape lighting: typically $100–$500 per tree depending on size and how much is wrapped; shrubs, hedges and walkways typically $75–$300 each.
- Takedown and storage on its own: typically $150–$400 when it is not included in the seasonal price.
- Permanent lighting: typically $35–$60 per linear foot installed, so a subdivision two-storey front of 60 to 90 feet commonly lands around $2,500–$5,000, and a full perimeter more.
- Commercial holiday lighting: quoted per site; small storefronts commonly start around $800–$2,500 for the season, and plazas and condo entrances are quoted after a walk-through.
All figures are before HST and assume the outdoor outlets are already there and GFCI-protected. Adding outlets is an electrician's work and priced separately by them.
What moves the price
- Height and pitch. The largest factor. Eaves above three metres mean fall protection; steep gables mean slow, careful work.
- Linear feet and peaks. A long straight eave is quick; each peak, dormer and corner adds time.
- Lights. Supplying commercial-grade LED for the season costs more than hanging your own, and lasts longer.
- Trees. Tall spruce and big maples take time, and power-line clearance limits what can be lit.
- Timing. October and early November installs are easiest to schedule; December installs in snow are slower.
- Distance. Rural and out-of-town properties may carry a travel charge.
What the lights cost to run
A typical LED roofline of 100 to 150 C9 bulbs draws somewhere around 50 to 150 watts. Run six hours a night for 40 nights, that is about 12 to 36 kWh for the season. At the Ontario Energy Board's prices from 1 November 2026, mostly off-peak at 9.1 ¢/kWh, that is roughly $1–$4 for the whole season, plus delivery charges on your bill. On the Ultra-Low Overnight plan, weekday hours from 4 to 9 p.m. are 37.7 ¢/kWh, which could bring the same lights to around $3–$10. Either way the lights are a rounding error on a Barrie winter hydro bill; old incandescent strings were not.
What a quote should say
Which runs are lit and in what colours, whether the lights are supplied or yours, whether January takedown and storage are included, what happens if a string fails mid-season, and the date range for install. A single figure over the phone for a house nobody has seen is a guess.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to buy lights or lease them?
Over several seasons, buying is usually cheaper; leasing has no upfront cost and nothing to store. Both come with install and takedown. The quote can show both.
Why is my older house quoted higher than a bigger new one?
Height, pitch and peaks. A steep Allandale gable with a porch and dormers takes far longer than a long, straight eave on a Holly two-storey, even if the new house is bigger.
Does permanent lighting pay for itself?
If you would otherwise pay for a seasonal install every year, permanent lighting typically costs about what several seasons of installs would, and then keeps working, with year-round use thrown in.
Is there a charge if a string fails mid-season?
Most seasonal packages include a service call for failed lights. Ask for it in writing with the quote.
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Most Barrie houses are quoted from a short visit or from clear photos of each side.
Is HST included in the ranges?
No. The ranges are before tax, and quotes show HST separately.
