Christmas Light Takedown and Storage in Barrie

The part of Christmas lights nobody looks forward to is January. In Barrie it is also the part with the most snow on the roof, and the reason so many strings end up in a tangle in the garage until March.

Takedown is booked when the lights go up, and it happens in January once the roofline can be reached safely. Barrie's January is its snowiest month, with about 66 cm on average and mean lows around -12 Â°C, so takedown dates move with the weather. A roof covered in ice is not climbed; the visit moves to the next workable day.

What happens at takedown

  • Removed run by run. Each roofline, peak, window and tree comes down as its own run, clips and all, without pulling at frozen strings.
  • Tested. Each run is checked; dead bulbs and damaged sockets are noted and replaced before the next install rather than discovered on the roof.
  • Coiled and labelled. Each run is wound on a reel or coiled and labelled with where it goes: front roofline, garage peak, left cedar.
  • Stored or left. Stored by the installer until fall, or left with you in labelled bins.

Owning versus leasing

Many installers offer two ways to pay for the lights. You can buy them outright with the first install and own them; they are stored and reinstalled each year for a smaller annual fee. Or you can lease them, paying one seasonal price that covers lights, install, takedown and storage, with nothing to buy. Terms vary by installer and are set out in the quote; neither option is promised here.

Reinstall next year

Because every run is labelled to its place on your house, next fall's install is quicker and the result matches last year's. Changes are easy to make at the same time: add the back deck, change the trees to colour, drop a window.

If you have permanent lighting

There is nothing to take down. In January the app goes back to warm white, or off. Many Barrie owners who have done a few seasons of takedown switch the roofline to permanent lighting and keep seasonal lights only for the trees and the porch.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take down lights someone else put up?

Usually, if they are clipped rather than nailed. Nailed or stapled lights take longer and may leave holes that need sealing; the quote will say so.

What if there is too much snow on the roof in January?

The takedown waits. The lights are rated for outdoor use and are safe to leave in place, switched off, until the roof can be worked safely.

Where are the lights stored?

Either with the installer, labelled for your house, or in labelled bins left in your garage or basement. Whichever you choose is written into the quote.
