Christmas Light Installation · Barrie

Christmas Light Installation in Barrie

The job is the same on every house: measure, plan the runs, clip the lights on straight and keep the power safe. What changes across Barrie is the house, and a steep 1910s gable near the bay is a very different afternoon from a two-storey in Holly.

A Barrie Christmas light install starts on the ground. The installer walks the house, measures every eave and peak that will be lit, finds the outdoor outlets and checks that they are GFCI-protected, looks up for the service drop and any other overhead lines, and agrees with you what gets lit and in what colour. The quote is written from that, run by run, so you can drop the back of the house or add the garage peak and see what changes.

What is installed

  • Rooflines and eaves. The main line that makes a house read as lit from the street. Lights are clipped to the shingle edge, drip edge or eavestrough, straight and evenly spaced, with the bulbs facing out.
  • Peaks and gables. The garage-forward gables of Ardagh and Painswick and the steep front peaks of Allandale and the East End. Peaks are the hardest part of the job and the part that most changes how the house looks.
  • Dormers, porches and bay windows. Common on the older houses near downtown, each its own short run.
  • Windows and doors. Outlined with clips on the trim, not taped or tacked.
  • Power and timers. Each circuit planned so no more than three strings are joined end to end, as ESA advises, connections lifted off the ground and sealed, and an outdoor-rated timer or smart plug set to your schedule.

The lights themselves

Installs use commercial-grade LED: C9 or C7 bulbs on heavy-gauge wire for rooflines, mini or wide-angle strings for windows, shrubs and trees, all carrying a Canadian certification mark and rated for outdoor use. LED runs cool, so it does not soften the vinyl soffit common on Barrie subdivision houses, and it draws a small fraction of the power of incandescent. Warm white, cool white, multicolour and solid colours are all available; many Barrie streets mix warm white on the roofline with colour in the trees. Your own lights can be used if they are certified, outdoor-rated and in good condition.

Clips, not nails

Nothing is nailed, screwed or stapled into the roof, fascia or soffit. Shingle clips slide under the edge of the bottom course; gutter clips grip the lip of the eavestrough; all-in-one clips handle both. On a Barrie roof where wet snow slides at the eave and refreezes, the clip type is chosen to hold when a sheet of snow lets go, and on steep gables the run sits slightly up the shingle so the slide passes over it.

When it happens

The install season runs from the last week of October to early December. Barrie's November is usually workable; December brings the bulk of the snow and the short afternoons, so installs then are slower and slots are scarce. Lights installed early can stay off until the downtown tree lighting, the first of December, or whenever you like.

Old house, new house

The two halves of Barrie light up differently. On an older house near the bay, the lights follow the architecture: each gable, the porch roof, the bay window, the dormers, so the shape of the house reads at night. Runs are short and many, the pitches are steep, and the planning is in where each string starts, so plugs land near an outlet instead of trailing across a porch. On a subdivision two-storey in Ardagh, Holly or Painswick, the main roofline and the garage gable do most of the work, and the decision is how far round the house to go: front only, front and sides, or the full perimeter for a corner lot. Corner lots on curving crescents are seen from two streets, and many owners light the second side for that reason.

Townhouses and condos

Many of Barrie's newer streets are freehold and condominium townhouse rows. In a condominium the exterior is usually common element, and the declaration and rules decide what owners can attach; some corporations allow seasonal lights on clips, some require board approval, some do it centrally. The installer will work to the corporation's rules, and it is worth asking the property manager before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home for the install?

Only for the first walk-around if you want to choose colours and runs in person; otherwise a phone call and photos do it. The installer needs access to the outdoor outlets and the yard.

Will the clips damage my shingles or eavestroughs?

No. Clips slide under the shingle edge or grip the eavestrough lip and come off with the lights. They are not glued or fastened, and they are chosen for your roof type.

How long does an install take?

Most Barrie houses are a few hours. A large two-storey with several peaks, trees and windows can be a full day. The quote gives an estimate.
